Heavy tanks
Panzer VI Tiger
Description
This famous heavy tank was developed by Henschel in 1942. On the tower was mounted a semi-automatic 88-mm anti-aircraft gun. The armor-piercing shell boasted a range of 1000 m, from which it could pierce 115mm armor. Its frontal armor was 100mm, tapering to 80mm.
On the Eastern Front alone, approximately 1,000 Tiger tanks were destroyed at the cost of 8,000 Soviet tanks. Such a loss ratio of 1:8 was seen nowhere else in World War II.
However, in short range combat, the Tiger lost most of its advantages. At close range, armament and armor becomes less important, and the tank’s poor maneuverability showed through as a major weakness.
