Tank destroyer

StuG III Ausf. G

Description

The standard German self-propelled gun. It was built on top of the PzKpfw III medium tank, and deployed for infantry support. In all, over 8,000 units of this modification were produced, beginning in January 1943.

The Ausf.G was the latest and most massive modification of the StuG III. It distinguished itself from previous versions with its additional armor plating on the sides and a remotely controlled machine gun. Its overall armor was increased to 80 mm.

It is noteworthy that the Stug endured through all of World War II – from the invasion of France to the fall of Germany. The vehicle was technically sound and inexpensive. The main disadvantage of all modifications was that the frontal armor was susceptible to almost any anti-tank gun.
