Light vehicles (armored vehicles)
Sd.Kfz. 251
Description
The standard German half-track armored vehicle. The serial version was created by Ganomag in 1940.
The Sd.Kfz.251 compartment carried up to twelve troops, and it came armed with one or two Rheinmetall-Borzing MG-34 caliber 7.92mm machine guns. The Sd.Kfz. 251 was available in four models – A, B, C or D – and in 23 specialized variants with various weapons and equipment configurations.
The Sd.Kfz.251 was critical to one of the key tactics of the Wehrmacht: the use of armored vehicles combined with a tank attack. The infantry carried inside could then secure bridgeheads and engage as needed.
