Tank destroyer
Ferdinand Sd. Kfz. 184
Description
This heavy self-propelled gun, also known as the Elephant, was built on the base of the heavy Tiger P tank, and produced by Ferdinand Porsche. Over serial production, a precious 90 units were manufactured.
It was one of the most powerful of all German armored vehicles during World War II. The distinguishing factors of the Ferdinand was its massive armor (up to 200 mm thick) and its weight – an astounding 65 tons. This tank destroyer was first sighted in Kursk, where it proved it could destroy a T-34 at a distance of 3000 meters, but not before the T-34 missed a broadside shot which might have taken the beast down.
The Ferdinand was the most famous of all German self-propelled artillery.
