Wehrmacht Pillbox
Description
A pillbox constructed of durable materials provides
excellent protection, and at the
beginning of the war, the Germans were leading the world in the construction of hardened fortifications.
In Germany, a large number of bunkers were used to strengthen the "Siegfried
Line" – a well-established system of
fortifications spanning western Germany, at a length of about 630 km.
Curiously,
the Germans never used that name,
instead referring to this line as the "West
Wall". The various sections of this
defensive wall were named in honor
of the old Germanic gods and heroes,
Siegfried among them. About 588 different bunkers
and fortifications were built along the West Wall. These
bunkers mostly housed small arms and machine guns, but they
protected the infantry inside from impacts of 150mm projectiles.
